A compression shirt is one of the most versatile pieces of gym kit you can own. You can train in it on its own, layer it under a T-shirt or hoodie, and wear it through Pakistan's summer and winter. Here's how to wear one properly, and a few things to avoid.

1. On its own at the gym

The simplest way: wear your compression shirt as your training top. It fits close, doesn't ride up during pull-ups or overhead presses, and lets you see your positioning in the mirror.

  • Pair it with gym trousers or gym shorts.
  • Tuck it in or wear it over the waistband; the hem should sit just past your belt line without rolling up.
  • If you lift heavy, a lever belt sits comfortably over a compression shirt because there's no loose fabric to bunch up.

2. Under an oversized T-shirt

A popular gym look is a compression shirt under an oversized T-shirt. You get the relaxed look on top, and when you warm up you can take the tee off and keep training in the compression shirt.

Tip: contrast works well. Try a plain Core compression shirt under a graphic oversized tee, or a graphic compression shirt under a plain one.

3. As a base layer in winter

From November to February, mornings in Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar can be cold. A compression shirt makes a thin first layer that fits under anything:

  • Wear it under a hoodie or jacket for your warm-up, then strip down once you're moving.
  • It sits flat under a tracksuit top without adding bulk.
  • For outdoor runs, layer a compression shirt, a light top and a jacket you can remove as you heat up.

4. Under everyday clothes

Because it's thin and fitted, a compression shirt can go under a shirt, kurta or sweater without adding bulk. Plain styles like the Core and Melange work best for this. If you plan to wear one for long days, choose the size that feels comfortable rather than the tightest fit.

5. In Pakistan's summer heat

You can wear a compression shirt in summer, but set the right expectations. A study of an upper-body compression garment during cycling at around 40°C found no cooling benefit during exercise. So:

  • Choose a lightweight, sweat-wicking fabric. The Titan is described as lightweight, breathable and moisture-wicking.
  • Drink water before, during and after training, and rest in the shade between outdoor sets.
  • Have a spare shirt in your bag for double sessions, and wash it after every use.
  • If you start to feel dizzy or overheated, stop and cool down. No shirt is worth pushing through heat exhaustion.

6. After training, for recovery

Some people keep compression wear on after a session. A 2014 meta-analysis found compression garments had a moderate effect on reducing muscle soreness after hard exercise, although most of that research used lower-body garments. If it feels good, there's no harm in keeping it on for a few hours; if it feels tight or uncomfortable, take it off. Read more in our guide to compression shirt benefits.

Can you sleep in a compression shirt?

You can if it's comfortable, but there's no need to. There's little evidence that sleeping in an upper-body compression shirt adds anything, and a loose, breathable shirt is usually more comfortable at night. Never sleep in one that leaves marks or causes tingling.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Wearing it too small. If you can't breathe deeply or it leaves deep marks, size up. Our size guide explains how to choose.
  • Wearing it two sessions in a row without washing. Sweat and bacteria build up quickly in fitted synthetic fabric.
  • Ruining it in the wash. Heat, fabric softener and ironing break down the stretch.

A bonus tip: adjust the length

If a shirt is too long for your torso, the Core and Melange are made from a fabric you can trim to your preferred length without the threads unravelling.

How to wash a compression shirt

  1. Turn it inside out.
  2. Machine wash in cold water with similar colours.
  3. Skip bleach, fabric softener and dryer sheets.
  4. Hang it to dry in a cool, shaded spot. Don't tumble dry.
  5. Don't iron it.
